On Laughter

Have you ever thought about how great it feels to laugh? I don’t mean a giggle, or a smile, or a chuckle, though those things are wonderful as well. I mean an out of control, deep, hard, breath stealing, belly laugh. The kind of laugh that often happens with another person, and the harder you laugh, the harder it is to stop. The kind that leaves your face soaked with tears and your muscles aching, That often times by the time it is over, you do not remember what induced it to begin with.

I hear people say, ‘maybe you just need a good cry’, when someone is suffering.

I have used those words myself, even TO myself. And a good cry can certainly be purging. It just recently occurred to me that a ‘good laugh’ may be just as therapeutic though perhaps a bit more difficult to produce when one is feeling low.

Any thoughts?
